Gospel Reflection

Jesus, you are the good shepherd,
you are willing to die for the sheep.
You are the good shepherd;
as the Father knows you and you know the Father,
in the same way you know your sheep,
and your sheep know you;
you are willing to die for us.
Jesus is the good shepherd who understands our frailty,
and knows each one of us by name.

Gospel Reading - Breakfast in Galilee

12“Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said; and none of us dared ask him if he really was the Lord, for we were quite sure of it. 13Then Jesus went around serving us the bread and fish.

14This was the third time Jesus had appeared to us since his return from the dead.

15After breakfast Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these others?”a

“Yes,” Peter replied, “you know I am your friend.”

“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.

16Jesus repeated the question: “Simon, son of John, do you really love me?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I am your friend.”

“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.

17Once more he asked him, “Simon, son of John, are you even my friend?”

Peter was grieved at the way Jesus asked the question this third time. “Lord, you know my heart;e you know I am,” he said.

Jesus said, “Then feed my little sheep. 18 When you were young, you were able to do as you liked and go wherever you wanted to; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands and others will direct you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19Jesus said this to let him know what kind of death he would die to glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”

. . . . .John 21:1-19
  1. Literally, “more than these”; see Mark 14:29.
  2. Literally, “all things.”

Look on those who revere you, O God,
on those who trust in your merciful love.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
     hallowed be your name,
     your kingdom come,
     your will be done,
          on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
     and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
     now and for ever.
Amen.
