The Song of Zechariah

1Blessèd are you O Lord our God:
you have come to your people and set them free.
2You have raised up for us a mighty Saviour:
born of the house of your servant David.
3 Through your holy prophets you promised of old:
that you would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
4You promised to show mercy to our forebears:
and to remember your holy covenant.
5This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
6free to worship you without fear:
holy and righteous in your sight
all the days of our life.
7And you, child, shall be called
the prophet of the Most High:
for you will go before the Lord
to prepare the way,
8to give God’s people knowledge of salvation:
through the forgiveness of their sins.
9In the tender compassion of our God:
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
10to shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death:
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to God: Source of all being,
Eternal Word, and Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever.
Amen.

New Testament Reading - Love One Another

thumb

16We know what real love is from Christ’s example in dying for us. And so we also ought to lay down our lives for our Christian brothers.

17But if someone who is supposed to be a Christian has money enough to live well, and sees a brother in need, and won’t help him — how can God’s love be within him? 18Little children, let us stop just saying we love people; let us really love them, and show it by our actions. 19Then we will know for sure, by our actions, that we are on God’s side, and our consciences will be clear, even when we stand before the Lord. 20But if we have bad consciences and feel that we have done wrong, the Lord will surely feel it even more,a for he knows everything we do.

21But, dearly loved friends, if our consciences are clear, we can come to the Lord with perfect assurance and trust, 22and get whatever we ask for because we are obeying him and doing the things that please him. 23And this is what God says we must do: Believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another. 24Those who do what God says — they are living with God and he with them. We know this is true because the Holy Spirit he has given us tells us so.

Intercession

Pray for 3 people on your heart ending with the prayer below.

To you, O Lord, we lift our eyes;
to you, enthroned in the heavens.
Lord, have mercy. E te Ariki, kia aroha mai.
Let our cry come before you, O Lord;
grant us understanding, according to your word.
Christ, have mercy. E te Karaiti, kia aroha mai.
Let your merciful goodness come to us, O Lord;
and your salvation, according to your promise.
Lord, have mercy. E te Ariki, kia aroha mai.
Satisfy those who thirst,
and fill the hungry with good things.
Christ, have mercy. E te Karaiti, kia aroha mai.
Your kingship has dominion over all,
and with you is our redemption.
Lord, have mercy. E te Ariki, kia aroha mai.
Amen.
