Collect

Almighty God,
through your Son Jesus Christ you overcame death
and opened for us the gate of everlasting life;
grant us to die daily to sin,
that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever.
Amen.

New Testament Reading - Guidance

1Paul and Silas went first to Derbe and then on to Lystra where they met Timothy, a believer whose mother was a Christian Jewess, but his father a Greek. 2Timothy was well thought of by the brothers in Lystra and Iconium, 3so Paul asked him to join them on their journey. In deference to the Jews of the area, he circumcised Timothy before they left, for everyone knew that his father was a Greek and hadn’t permitted this before.a 4Then they went from city to city, making known the decision concerning the Gentiles, as decided by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. 5So the church grew daily in faith and numbers.

6Next they traveled through Phrygia and Galatia because the Holy Spirit had told them not to go into the Turkish province of Asia Minor at that time. 7Then going along the borders of Mysia they headed north for the province of Bithynia, but again the Spirit of Jesus said no. 8So instead they went on through Mysia province to the city of Troas.

9That nightb Paul had a vision. In his dream he saw a man over in Macedonia, Greece, pleading with him, “Come over here and help us.” 10Well, that settled it. Wec would go to Macedonia, for we could only conclude that God was sending us to preach the Good News there.

. . . . . Acts 16:1-10
  1. Implied
  2. Literally, “In the night.”
  3. Luke, the writer of this book, now joined Paul and accompanied him on his journey.

Prayer

Our Father,
save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.

Giver of the present, hope for the future:
save us from the time of trial.
When prophets warn us of doom,
of catastrophe and of suffering beyond belief,
then, God, free us from our helplessness,
and deliver us from evil.
Save us from our arrogance and folly,
for you are God who created the world;
you have redeemed us and you are our salvation.
Amen

The Blessing

May the risen Christ grant us the joy of eternal life.
Amen
